During the year of 1998 David felt the Lord speaking to him about doing missionary work as a life long calling not just short term. He knew somehow in his heart that Africa was involved but felt more and more called to the Pacific. Any casual look at a map shows that these two places are about as far apart as you can get - what was God saying?
As the year progressed God unfolded a peculiar and unique vision - one David would never have known could exist. God showed him how there are French Speaking nations in the Pacific Islands. There islands are very hard places to work and need so much evangelism and discipleship. But beyond that they also have a destiny and inheritance.
There are French Speaking nations in Africa as well. These nations represent one of the largest Muslim parts of the 10/40 window. God’s call was to train and mobilize French speaking people from the Pacific and send them to North & West Africa. With a common language and many cultural gifts that Westerners lack - we believe, we know, these “French Islanders” are the perfect mission force to reach their “African cousins”. David’s main gifting and desire is to teach. He is excited to be used in teaching and training young people that will be sent into missions.
Erin has wanted to do missions since she was very young, and Africa was always a place she was interested in. While she was praying about marriage and a relationship with David she began to feel a call of her own to the Pacific Islands. The Lord called her alongside David’s vision but with a particular emphasis entirely for her - reconciliation. In the Pacific Islands - like many other places - British colonialism, tribal wars and westernization have left in their wake many broken people.
There is a deep healing that needs to take place in the hearts of so many individuals and entire communities. It is a work of forgiveness, repentance and reconciliation. Erin is called by God to be an instrument of this healing. She is eager to see how God can use her and her family to bring this message wherever they go.
A Little More Background...
David is the youngest of six children in his family. His parents are from England and moved a few times within Canada before settling where David would eventually be born and where they still live today.
The small town of Comox houses the only military base on Vancouver Island. Due to the high number of military personnel stationed there from Quebec, a teacher began a K-6 program in French at the nearby elementary school for the Quebecois children.
David’s mum wanting him to be bilingual asked to enroll David in Kindergarten in this French program that had begun just a couple years earlier. Consequently David is the only child among all six that grew up bilingual: speaking English at home and French at school.
Little did he realize that over 15 years later God would call him into missions with a vision for the French speaking world. It is a beautiful thing to look back and see the hand of God upon our lives from the very beginning.
