While Erin and I were praying this morning God brought to my mind a scene from 1991's "Naked Gun 2 1/2". Seriously, He did.
God told me that lots of little lessons He has taught us over the past few years are coming together to form mighty weapons! These revelations each come with a long story, but not now. Lessons such as: the power of declaration, faith first - feelings second, sonship instead of orphan mentality, identity in Christ leads to inheritance, etc.
Let me backtrack to the beginning of the week. We were praying together as a team about the DTS we will run next year. We were praying about a BIG decision that involves a lot of risk and will take miracles from God to pull off. We were asking God what to do when my wife had a word of wisdom (one of her gifts). She said “God can’t answer us properly until we break off fear! If we are bound by fear then we will not be able to hear Him or make a decision”. We then moved into a great time praying into breaking off fear and unbelief.
Then, a couple days ago Erin and I got our support check for the month of September. It is barely one third of what we will need for next month. So we stared praying: “God what do we do?” (there is it again). “How do we partner with You to see the rest come in?” Again God spoke: “David imagine this conversation is a house. If I spoke truth to you now it would be standing on a foundation of fear and panic. Anything I say to you will not stand for long.” God revealed that this small support check highlighted small seeds of doubt if God really loves us and will take care of us. God said that we must deal with our faith and trust first, then we can go forward from there. Otherwise we will simply freak out again at the next bad circumstance.
God gave the 10 Commandments to Israel before they entered the Promised Land. He also dealt with their unbelief before they could enter Canaan. He had to make sure they were spiritually ready for the inheritance. Inheritance comes to those who know their identity first! Our identity comes from knowing God's love and goodness towards us.
God wants to move our hearts from a place of doubt, unbelief and fear to a place of faith, trust, rest, peace and joy! There is joyful hope knowing that God’s intentionality is powerful. What He intends to do He will accomplish. A lot of little lessons along the way are coming together so that we can battle fear and doubt to move into our inheritance!
This is one of my favorite pictures of Malia so far in her five short years of life! Her face is so beautiful and hilarious and cute, all at the same time. It is a picture of happiness and joy. She makes this face every once in a while and I LOVE IT.
What I love about Malia here is something we all love about young children: the ability to find joy in small (to us trivial) things. I think this is a large part of what Jesus meant when He said we must be like children to enter the Kingdom of God.
Malia made this face once when she tried to catch a baby gecko. She has made this face over playing in the rain, bugs, little “treasures” she finds on the ground, etc. She is so happy with something so simple.
It is sad that it takes so much to entertain or bring adults happiness. We can find fault in anything and with ever increasing technology it gets harder and harder to impress us. Louis C.K. said it very well on Conan twice - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEY58fiSK8E and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5HbYScltf1c (Warning: he does have some crude language.)
Malia however can find joy in things that cost nothing and that other people find mundane. May it ever be so!
